Our Wonderful Pie Awards

When we enter our pies into the British Pie Awards and the Great Taste Awards, we send pies that are part of that day’s batch we’ve made; no kidology, nothing ‘especially’ created just for the judges. If you were on the judging panel, you’d recognise the pies as the ones that Mud makes day in day out, we call it being honest.

And at Mud, we’re immensely proud of all the awards we’ve won over the years because it’s recognition for the hard work and exacting standards that me and all my ‘Mud Family’ strive towards each and every day. I’ve always insisted that our ethos of sourcing top quality ingredients as locally as possible helps capture the true taste of homestyle baking because we make our pies with the same care, quality and attention to detail that you and I do in our own kitchens; we never compromise, and neither should you! Perhaps that’s why we’ve been judged as one of Britain’s most highly awarded artisan pie makers, but our most important judges are YOU! And we look forward to delighting you with absolute top quality and taste and hearing what you think.

And just so you’re aware, not all of our pies have won awards because many of them are too new to have entered any competitions.

Steak and Ale Pie Hands down, this pie is an award superstar and your ultimate favourite pie. The judges at the British Pie Awards have made these comments: “a very good pie”, “flavour and quality is excellent” and what most impressed them: “well filled pie with tender chunks of meat, pastry tasty and crisp”, “the pastry has a fabulous texture and flavour”, “clearly good quality ingredients used”. That’s the judges’ thoughts but the ultimate decision is yours.

Steak and Stilton Pie Along with tender chunks of grass-fed steak, the showstopper ingredient is the Long Clawson Stilton, the calibre of which you’d be more accustomed to finding on a fine cheese board but we’re all about quality and maximum flavour and the judges agreed: “lovely balance of beef and cheese flavours”, “piesational”, “nice and tender meat”.

Steak and Kidney Pie Undeniably the heavyweight when it comes to impressing the judges and the first pie my grandmother taught me to make, perhaps that’s why we’re so expert when it comes to the Steak & Kidney Pie. It certainly caught the attention of the judges at the British Pie Awards, who commented: “loved this pie and could easily have finished off the lot. Good pastry, plenty of filling, distinct pieces of tender meat and kidney – we would buy it. Please make more”, “the meat is chunky and succulent and the gravy just right” and “the pastry is excellent, short and of good flavour. The filling is rich and generous with real depth of flavour. The texture of the gravy is excellent”.

Squash, Spinach & Vegan Feta Pie This pie has actually come 1st twice at the British Pie Awards; once as a vegetarian pie in 2018 and we then redeveloped it to make it all vegan in 2020 and it won again! These were the remarks from the judges: “crisp pastry with a generous amount of filling”, “perfectly balanced flavours in the filling and good short pastry made this pie a very rewarding and savoury eating experience”, “we love pies and have tasted enough to know that it isn’t easy balancing the filling so that flavours are complementary”, and what most impressed: “the flavour and the pastry quality”, “excellent pastry and lovely filling”.

Lamb, Redcurrant and Rosemary PieUsing only lean, tender chunks of lamb, not minced, this is a customer favourite, especially in springtime and it’s definitely caught the attention of the judges over the years: “nice looking homemade pie”, “wholesome looking pie”, “the lamb is sweet and tender and the flavours of all the ingredients came through and were evenly balanced”, “filling texture and flavour, very good”, “a good honest pie.” We’re all about honesty - from the local sourcing of our natural ingredients to the use of our traditional methods - and we think you will taste the difference.

Mushroom and Asparagus PieThere’s no compromise in our vegetarian offerings - we keep to our ethics of using only the finest quality ingredients, sourced as locally as possible to the bakery and, with this pie, the judges have identified with our attention to detail: “great pastry”, “tasty asparagus”, “good flavour combinations” – no wonder it’s your favourite vegetarian pie.

Game PieThe first of our pies to win at the British Pie Awards but not the last! All our game is sourced locally, right on our doorstep, in the heart of the South Downs; provenance has always been key to us and we’re very proud of the relationships that we’ve built with our local farmers and growers. The British Pie Awards judges commented: “a generous filling with a good level of chunky meat and a decent gravy”, “an enjoyable pie with obvious care and attention given to the ingredients”, “excellent ratio of pastry to filling”, “the flavours of all the quality ingredients came through equally and produced a satisfying pie”, “delicious pastry and filling, all round wonderful pie”.

Chicken, Ham and Leek PieThe Mud customer’s second favourite pie, filled with British free-range chicken and local organic double cream and milk and the judging panel had to say: “lovely crisp pastry”, “homemade with a touch of finesse”, “we loved this pie and couldn’t get enough of it”, “the filling is generous with distinct chunks of chicken and ham”.

Chip Shop Chicken Curry PieReminiscent of and inspired by the classic curry sauce from Vince’s Fish & Chip Shop in my childhood home. We love this pie, you love this pie and 4 Gold Awards says the judges love this pie too, twice coming 2nd at the British Pie Awards and drawing comments such as: “well filled”, “tasty chicken/tender”, “excellent flavour” and they were most impressed by the “combined flavour of the pastry and filling.” This is a mild and sweet curry sauce with chunks of great quality, British free-range chicken, we think this could become your favourite pie too.
